5 Brook Trout Tips for New Brunswick
Image via WikipediaI love fishing for brook trout. New Brunswick was my first run in with the colourful brook trout and I was hooked immediately.
Fishing Brook Trout Tip #1
Stealth. Don’t let them see you. The not so smart trout may stick around long enough to tease you but that 3 pound brook trout you want to hook up with has already long gone by that first cast.
Brook Trout Fishing Tip #2
Observation. Take a few minutes to watch the water, see what the brookies are doing. Are they rising to take anything from the surface and if so what are they taking.
Turn a few submerged rocks over and see who lives there. This will give you good idea of the aquatic life brook trout love to gobble up.
Brook Trout Fishing Tip #3
Size does matter. Taking the time to match the size and colour of what you are trying to immitate can really made the difference between just fishing and catching.
Fishing Brook Trout Tip #4
Catch and Release. Practice catch and release but know how to treat your brook trout so they survive to reproduce and catch another day.
One key thing I pay attention to is:
- Not to have bug spray on my hands.
- Make sure my hands are wet before picking up the brook trout.
- Don’t pick the trout up by the hook, be kind and cradle the brookie in your hand so their insides are supported. Plus would you like to be yanked out of the water by your face?
Brook Trout Fishing Tip #5
If you do damage a brook trout take it home and eat it. They taste great.
I love a good feed of brook trout but I don’t keep any large ones. Instead I take great care to release the larger brook trout for future breeding stock. Big fish tend to breed big fish.
I like to have a good feast of brookies in the early spring while the water is still icy cold. They just seem to be firmer and tastier.
