While many may argue that the term “pole” refers to a relic of a tool while a “rod” is a more sophisticated piece of fishing equipment, the fact remains that the two terms are generally interchangeable. Whether called a pole or a rod, the tool has been fashioned in the same manner for many years, with the basic materials of graphite, carbon, fiberglass, bamboo or composites proving to be the main improvements. Another is in design, with different poles being used for different purposes. While there are many, the main types of fishing rods are fly fishing poles , spin casting poles and bait casting rods.

Fly fishing poles or rods need to have a lightweight and flexible feel. Bamboo fly fishing rods offer best quality, but generally are an costly purchase. Graphite rods are the most highly sought types on today’s market as they are strong, lightweight and yet flexible. Usually between 7 and 9 feet on length, the size of the stream or lake dictates which pole length should be used. The term “rod weight” actually describes the line size used on the pole, and can range between 1 and 15. Spin casting is a relatively easy skill to acquire, and is recommended to many beginners primarily for that reason. Shorter than most, the spin cast rod also requires high flexibility. The size of rod and line will vary depending on the type of fish being pursued; bass would need a heavier weight than a panfish would require.

During professional fishing tournaments, bait casting is the common method. Bait casting rods are heavier and longer, and stronger to be able to combat the fighting foe at the end of the line. This type of fishing pole is also very popular with bass fishermen due to the short time it takes to land their bass using the strong and powerful line. The reel also sits on the top of the pole, and is able to handle the heavyweight line needed to bring in “the big one”. Bait casting poles and reels take much more practice to master, and is considered to be more for the experienced angler.

Fly fishing for bass certainly will not win you any fishing tournaments. But it is the most challenging way you will find to catch bass. It is far removed from most fly fishing techniques, such as fly fishing for trout in a mountain stream.

The rod used is heavier than those used for catching trout. Rods for bass fishing are usually 8 weight, a rod such as this is required because this type of fish takes some landing. Also the fly used would be larger as well. The leader used for this type of fishing would be shorter as well, 4-6 feet, with the tippet at around a 8 pound test line.

The best way to catch your first fish, is to cast your line from a boat towards shore, making sure it lands underneath trees and there branches. A technique that is known to work well, is simply letting the fly rest on the water for a period of time, then snap it across the water quickly, this is a great way to get the attention of any bass that are there. You will find that the popping sound of this action will attract the fish and then you can make your first strike.

Some of the best fishing you will find is in smaller bodies of water. Small county lakes and slow moving creeks are perfect for fly fishing. Slow moving creeks are a favorite, this is because can use the shore to cast from and position your fly in a favorable position, such as, beneath trees.

The thing about this type of fishing, is the fight the fish will put up, will make it seem far larger than it is. A two to three pound bass caught will seem and feel like a six pound fish. All this adds to thrill and excitement of your new fly fishing experience.

Fly fishing for bass is not only an exciting experience, it is also fun to do. Different knots serve different purposes like tying two lines together, shortening a particularly long line, to name two.

Below is a list of some of the most popular knots used in fly fishing. A description accompanies each of them to show how they are used in real-world fishing situations.

Slip Knot - this is probably one of the most basic and most important knots in fishing. This knot is used to fasten the line to the spool.

Constriction Knot - this is the type of knot which is used to tie two lines together, especially those made with different materials. However, its use isn’t advised on modern lines made of different materials.

Albright Knot - not to be associated with the former British Prime Minister, this knot is primarily used to tie the backing to the fly line. It can also be used to join lines of different diameters.

Surgeon’s Knot - a simple and neat way of tying to lines together. It can be best described as a double overhead knot.

Barrel Knot - also known as the Blood Knot, this is another way of tying two lines together. Although weaker and more complicated than the Surgeons Knot, it is a neater way of tying a knot.

There are several more knots that fishing enthusiasts do, but those listed above are by far the most popular and effective.

The original plan was to head out Sunday, the 14th, for our last day of Pickerel fishing this year. Saturday morning, after returning from Canadian Tire with the bullet sinkers and hooks I needed for Sunday, I checked my email and found Jamie in there asking if I wanted to go Saturday instead of Sunday.

I grabbed the phone and called Jamie before finishing the email.

Beating The Tail End of a Hurricane

The reasons Jamie changed his mind was one, the hurricane that was tracking up from Texas. The winds were going to be strong and of course would be accompanied by lots of rain. Not a good combo for Chain Pickerel fishing. And secondly, it’s always great to go sooner in my books.

Jamie arrived, we loaded up the car and then I babbled like a little kid all the way there. I tend to do that when I get excited and I am happy to say Jamie didn’t drop me off half way there.

It can be a bit decieving on the drive to Chipman from Moncton. It might look calm and the trees don’t seem to be moving but once you pull around the corner and see the water it can really surprise you just how much wind there is. This day the water was almost calm as you can see in the picture above. An ideal Pickerel day so far.

There was a slight breeze blowing but not enough to affect the weed areas. The water was like glass in those areas and very little wind on the open water. Seeing that just made me more hyper. Poor Jamie, he was probably looking for some ear plugs by that point.

The day turned into a perfect day. It was so cloudy going up we though for sure we would be fishing in the rain like the last trip but instead shortly after we arrived the clouds parted, the sun came out and the wind all but stopped.

We had a perfect Pickerel day in New Brunswick.

No Time Wasted

I have been fishing since before Jamie was even born and I still get excited like a kid going to Disney World for the first time. Jamie was much more in control of his excitement than I was and I am sure he just laughed when I just had to run down to the water for that first cast.

There are a couple of weed patches right were we launch the canoe and that’s where I made my first cast, right along the edge of the weeds.

I was expecting a Pickerel to come flying from the weeds to nail the big pink worm I had on but to my surprise the wake came from the open water and exploded on my bait.

I think they just sit there waiting for anyone to step into the water so they can eat them.

Over the past 5 years I have been recovering from heart damage and haven’t been able to go fishing. I was so excited to just be fishing I didn’t bring a measuring tape or a scale so I am not sure how big the Pickerel was but my best guess would be about 20 or so inches.

Jamie didn’t even push me in the water for getting in the first cast.

Politely Sharing The Water

When we arrived there were already other people fishing from a motor boat. They were extremely polite and never came close to our canoe or the area we chose to fish. In the past we have had people that would fly by and take over the water. One year a jerk swamped our canoe with his speed boat and flipped us right over. My fishing buddy that day lost all his gear and the guy never stopped.

Then The Clouds Parted

We expected the wind to pick up and the rain to start at any time but instead the clouds parted, the sun came out and the wind all but stopped.

To make this day even better the pickerel seemed to go out of there way to make our last day of fishing this year such a great one. It was pretty much none stop action all day. By the end of the day I could hardly stand up and my arms had no energy left at all. They wore me right out, awesome.

I am not sure if Jamie is fixing his line or doing his Pickerel catching happy dance.

I don’t know how many Chain Pickerel we caught Saturday but the action was constant all afternoon and we didn’t leave until it was dark. It was one of those days people pray for.

Our day went from a possible stormy day to the ideal fishing day.

We are looking forward to next season already and I think over the winter I will tie a few weedless Pickerel flies and get Jamie to do some fly fishing for Chain Pickerel. The experience is unbelievable and can be quite addictive.
