How Do You Like My Baby Bass?

casey with a big striped bass

Well I’d say Casey is looking pretty pleased with himself after landing this huge 45”. 38 1/2 lbs striped bass on Sunday September 10, 2011. I would love to have been there with my video camera.

Congrats to Casey

fall-bass-fishingSome of my sport fishing friends here in New Brunswick and I really enjoy fishing for smallmouth bass all season long, but the fall season is without a doubt the best time of year as this is the time of the year smallmouth start on that final feeding frenzy to fatten up for the lean winter months.

I will say that spring is my second most favourite time of the year but it’s largely due to the fact I’ve experienced quite enough winter by then.

What Makes Fall Such Good Fishing?

As fall approaches the water temperature in rivers and lakes begin to drop which causes the weed beds to die off slowly which in turn decreases the level of oxygen in the water.

The lower levels of oxygen in the water sends the bass looking for more oxygen rich water which usually means they will be stacked up around healthy weed beds. This makes it much easier to locate them if you focus on finding the remaining healthy patches of weeds.

Testing The Waters

The last time I was out Bass fishing in the fall there were four of us. I wanted to test the waters as they say so I didn’t tell my buddies that I was only going to fish green weeds.

At the end of the day we compared notes and I had hooked and landed 4 times as many fish as two of my buddies. The third guy did the same thing as I did and only fished spots that still had healthy weed beds.

Mmmm That Looks Tasty

It’s at this time Smallies tend to be less discriminating than they can be at other times of the year due to the fact winter is fast approaching and now is the time to put on some fat for the winter months. Smallies are inclined to chase almost any baits at this point in the season. I have observed them go way out of their way to reach a lure in the Fall.

I truly do take pleasure in casting in the lily pads for Smallmouth bass at any time but particularly throughout the Fall once patches of weeds which are producing oxygen begin the process of to die off. For the duration of those fall weeks I really watch the healthier weeds still making oxygen.

Smallmouth bass are cold blooded therefore as the temperature of the lake water lowers the Smallmouth will slow down as well so it’s necessary to slow your baits as well. You will find that you hook up with a lot more Smallmouth’s.

Three Strikes And Your Outta Here Jim

casey-bass-fishingMy fishing buddy Casey gave me a call yesterday to see if I was up for a day on Lake Petit again. Ha, that’s funny as I live to fish.

The last couple of times we were out on Lake Petit it was windy and the water was like chocolate milk, well yesterday wasn’t any different.

I looked out one of my office windows into my backyard and could see the tree tops swaying. It was another windy day but that wasn’t going to stop me from hitting the water.

Our first two trips out on Lake Petit we were skunked and as I was getting into Casey’s truck I laughed and said ‘Three strikes and I’m outta here.’

The waves were bigger than the first couple of times we were out so we decided we would head up Turtle Creek and see how it was in there.

It was much less windy in there but you could see the effect the wind had had on the water already. The creek, normally pretty clear water and stoney bottom was chruned up and dark but the wind was much less in there.

covered-bridge

There was a covered bridge up the river a bit that I didn’t even know existed. It was here that Casey could see that the water was up a two feet higher than normal.

We have had a lot of rain this summer so it didn’t surprise me. Jamie and I have been out a few times to places that would normally be almost dried up at this time of year and the water is still there.

casey-and-bassWe headed up the creek and I caught the first bass, but it was too big to fit in a picture so you will just have to imagine it.

Okay it was all of 8 inches long. I laughed and asked him to go get his mother and gently dropped him back into the water.

A little further up Casey had a strike and jumped up saying it was a great hit.

Just as he said that I saw it jump and to me it looked about the same size as the one I had. I said ‘No, I don’t think so, he just thinks he is big.” and then I laughed.

When Casey brought it to the boat it was considerably bigger than I had thought. I guess I need new prescripton sunglasses.

We fished way up Turtle Creek, way further than Casey had gone before as the water was pretty high.

We pulled up beside another fisher who had just released a 19″ smallie, which lifted our hopes. He said he was fishing a plastic worm and that the fish were right on the bottom.

We saw him again later but he hadn’t caught anything else.

Shortly after that I caught another huge smallmouth bass. Well it was bigger than my first bass. I am sure it went all the way to 11 inches.

The places we fished had a gravel bottom. I think it would be a great place to catch pre-spawning bass. We will have to give that a go next year.

It was still a whole lot better than sitting in my office typing all day.

Going Fishing? Bring Along Your Banjo Minnows

One of the most important things that any fishermen won’t have to forget is to bring along his tons of lures so that he can enjoy catching all the fishes in the lake all throughout the day but according to some Banjo Minnow reviews, why try to bring a whole lot of fish lures when you can only bring just a few of them in order to catch all the fishes in the lake? You may not be aware but lots of fishermen like you are now entertaining the thought of buying artificial fishing lures that can look exactly like a fish and there are some that even have the real fish smell and can even move like a fish to simulate a small fish to lure the big fishes. If you really like to enjoy fishing, you better bring your own artificial “larger-then-life” fish lures along with you.

Honestly, there are several companies who are dealing with Banjo Minnows because of the hype of this fish lure. Sad to say, the Banjo Minnow fishing lure that they are promoting on the Net are not what they seem to be. Some fishing accessories companies don’t follow the standard regulations and you might think that what you have purchased is a reliable Banjo Minnow fish lure but it’s not. So, how will you ever prove to yourself that what you have seen and would like to buy is the best and most reliable Banjo Minnow?

The only way to find out if what you are investing in is the real thing is to go to the Internet and read some customer or product reviews that will give out testimonies from people who have tried to buy a Banjo Minnow 006, for instance, and how they have enjoyed their fishing trips because they have caught a lot with the help of this fish lure. Once you have read a review or two, that’s the time that you can decide what kind of Banjo Minnow would you like and where to get them.

Fishing through the ice is a sport that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. Unlike other Winter sports, it’s cheap to get fixed up and with just a little bit of knowledge, a Greenhorn can have an excellent chance at success their first trip onto the ice.

But what’s required to begin ice fishing? One has so many choices in fishing reels on the market now, First Timer could easily lay out hundreds of their hard earned money on ice fishing supplies and never get what they really need.

Knowing this, I sit down and made this collection of basic ice fishing tackle that a First Timer will need to start. What’s even better is that for less money than it cost for a trip to the grocery store, you should be able to nab all the fishing gear that a Beginner will need to start fishing.

Before anything else, you will need an auger meant for ice fishing to cut holes in the hard water. I recommend a 5 or 6 inch ice auger for panfish. For bigger fish like Walleye, Pike or Channel Catfish, then I recommend a 8 or 10 inch ice auger. You have two choices, power augers or the manual augers. You need to keep in mind that the manual augers are less expensive but require more effort to drill a hole. You will also need a scoop to get the ice chips out of the ice hole.

You’ll want to buy quality tip ups or ice rods. A lot of fishermen bore a lot of holes over rock piles, weed beds and other types of bottom structure and use numerous tip-ups to increase their chances of catching fish. Other fishermen prefer to ice fish with an ice fishing rod. For Beginners, I’d want a few tip ups along with a good rod so you can see which tactic catches you the most fish.

Fishing line should be designed for cold water that is associated with ice fishing. The near freezing water can make the line so stiff that it breaks easily. That’s why you’ll want to be sure and obtain line specifically designed for ice fishing. Cortland makes a product called Ice Line that is great. The line you buy for ice fishing is the most crucial part of your ice fishing supplies.

Beginners will want to get some jigs and lures designed for ice fishing. Tiny jigs are excellent for panfish like Perch, Bluegill and Crappie. Also tear drop jigs and tiny spoons will come in handy when the panfish get finicky. As for bait, panfish love mealworms and spikes while larger fish such as Walleye prefer Worms or baitfish like smelt. Be sure to talk to local fishermen to see what’s they recommend a Beginner use their first time out on the ice.

It would be wise to bring something to sit on. Many seasoned ice fishermen prefer an ordinary five gallon bucket. Some will even bring lawn chairs out on the ice, but a 5 gallon bucket will also help you haul your gear to and from the ice.

And this is all you need to to start ice fishing. Make sure you get a fishing license and read up on the regulations for the body of water you plan on going fishing at. Getting a ticket for breaking a law can put a damper on your ice fishing efforts. You’re cleared to go fishing and start drilling holes in the lake. Never forget the first rule of ice fishing, be safe and follow all the safety rules for fishing on the ice.

Fishing with a New Buddy

JamieI think Jamie and his twin girls had a great day of fishing Smallmouth bass. Here is another little post from Jamie.

After talking to James and sharing the day I had with my girls I asked him if he would like to go fishing for the day. I know it is hard to believe but he said yes.

I strapped my canoe on my car and picked James up early in the morning and we were off to try to catch some pickerel and bass. I went to Cassidy Lake earlier this summer and caught a few small pickerel so I was excited to go to some water that had pickerel that would be more plentiful and larger in size.

We arrived at the location and of course we were both excited to get fishing that we fished off shore for a few minutes. James had one follow his lure after just a few casts which got my heart pumping. We put the canoe in the water and made our way to where James said he normally fishes.

I had an excellent time trying to catch these fish. It was great fun watching them chase after the lures in the water. I quickly realized that they are quite a predator. We caught a few, but that did not matter, as I told James it was just as much fun watching them chase and hit the baits. If not by the end of this fishing season, I am truly hoping that James and I will be back to try for some more pickerel very soon.

The day was actually very winding and it came to a point where we decided to leave and try for some bass. We loaded up our gear and the canoe and in a short time we were fishing bass. This was non-stop action for about three hours, I would say we caught and released about sixty bass. They were not monsters but that made no difference to me at all as I am someone who just has a great time catching fish no matter the size.

James was a great help teaching me how to fish in the weeds for pickerel. I am hoping to practice lots more very soon. I am very thankful that an evening surfing the internet led me to James’ fishing site. It led to a great day with my girls and also to another great day fishing for pickerel and bass with a new fishing buddy!
