The Fisheries program of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service was started 133 years ago. In addition to ensuring that there will be continuing opportunities for all fishermen across the United States, they are also responsible for monitoring and maintaining the national fish populations. They put emphasis on a fish species that might be in danger of being depleted and focus on the recovery of their population. There are two different programs in the Fisheries program, the National Fish Hatchery System and the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance Program.

There are many responsibilities assigned directly to the Fish and Wildlife Management Assistance program of the Fish and Wildlife Service. The management assistance part of the name refers to their planning and management services, with regard to animal populations. While not directly involved, they participate in the planning end of restoring endangered fish populations. They monitor the numbers of fish in the hatcheries and how long they have been there, and they monitor, regulate and prevent the invasion of predator species. When repopulating does occur, the program monitors the repopulation to see how effective it is. Public education regarding conservation is their final responsibility.

The National Fish Hatchery program has multi-functional responsibilities. They use hatcheries to breed fish that have no genetic defects and then place them into the wild to repopulate in areas that are depleted. The hatchery workers do research to identify and try to prevent disease that may be affecting fish and aquatic wildlife. In addition to all of this, they also provide refuge habitats to fish that have become an endangered species, as an attempt to allow them time to breed for the purpose of repopulating.

The National Fish Hatchery program in the Fish and Wildlife Service is largely responsible for maintaining the population levels of game fish, such as largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, which are native to certain areas. They make sure that the states and fishermen are in compliance with state and federal fishing limits. These limits are set as a means of ensuring that the population of certain fish does not become depleted to the point that they cannot recover. Fishing provides a valuable source of both food and recreation, along with a source of income for the local businesses that support the fishing industry. Disturbing a balance in population levels could upset the local economy in a tragic way.

If you’re not an avid fisherman, but are interested in the sport as a hobby, then you may want to be sure you are not joining a professional club that requires its members to participate in local and sometimes national tournaments. But, if that is your cup of tea, then those kind of clubs are for you. Some organizations are free while others require a fee and application before being accepted. For those just starting out, who just want to learn how to compete, there are bass fishing clubs that are used purely as a free or cheap learning experience.

The size of the bass fishing clubs you are considering is also important. This is because the larger ones offer many more and different opportunities than the smaller ones do. The larger clubs tend to better suited to the serious bass fisherman because they have the funds to help their members become involved in tournaments and learning opportunities. The smaller clubs are very well suited to the bass fisherman who just wishes to fish for fun and enjoy the companionship of other local fishermen.

Before you join a club, you should look into it to see whether it meets your needs and expectations. If you just want to join up with other small time fishermen who simply bass fish for fun, then you will want one of the local free clubs that are so easy to find. However, if you wish to meet other serious, and sometimes professional bass fishermen, then look into one of the competitive clubs. You will need to pay some annual dues to professional bass fishing clubs and there is often an application process.

The size of the organization can make a difference also. If you are looking for more one-on-one attention and mentoring, perhaps a smaller group would work out better for you. For that kind of attention you will want to make sure that the mentors and leaders are dedicated and have the time to perform those duties. For those professionals who want to enter competitions nationwide, a large and perhaps national group would suit your needs best. Usually larger bass fishing clubs tend to have more funds to provide more benefits for their members.

Smallmouth Bass are one of my favorite species for sport fishing on the fly in New Brunswick. I have caught them up to 4 pounds but only a couple of times. I usually max out in the two, two and a half pound area but I don’t mind because they all think their 4 pounds.

Smallies a blast whether your using a baitcaster, spinning rod or fly rod. My personal preference has to be using my fly rod for smallies. I do keep my spinning rod available for those days that the wind is taking the fun out of fly fishing.

I have mentioned a little hot spot for smallmouth bass that I go to when it’s too windy and it also makes a great place to learn how to fly fish as there are plenty of spots one can cast from without hooking up in a tree or a bush.

I have a little spot I go to when it just too windy elsewhere so I get to use my fly rod here most days. I try to keep my favorite spots a bit hush hush and in the past 20 years or so I have only told two people where this spot actually is. One of those people is my son and I am sure he won’t tell any one.

The smallmouth bass in this spot only seem to grow to about 14 inches but what a day of fun you can have with light action gear.

Another reason I love this place so much is that it’s only about an hour from home and I am within about 15 minutes of trout fishing and pickerel fishing and even Atlantic salmon fishing. Can’t beat that with a stick.

These waters don’t require you to fish using a fly rod like a few other places I fish so those that are just learning can go back and forth between a spinning rod and the fly rod.

Come and go fishing with me, as long as you don’t mind wearing a blindfold while getting there.

When I started fly fishing I began fishing trout in small streams. Nothing like a good feed of brook trout while the water is still really cold. Later in the season as the water temperature rises I tend to strictly catch and release as I find they are a bit wormy by then.

After I had practised fly fishing for a while I moved up to fly fishing for salmon. That is an experience you can share but it is always best experienced to really understand why it’s so addictive.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout is great but one day I decided to fly fish for bass. I found this to be a great way to get some one hooked on fly fishing. The main reason is that you can fly fishing for trout and salmon but a lot of care needs to be taken to keep out of the trees but not so with the places we fish for bass.

I purchased two float tubes so that I could reach areas that are out of reach of other boats and even canoes, plus I was equipped to take friends fishing.

Over the years I have found a ton of places bass live. Out of those many great fishing spots I have a few places that are just made for fly fishing newbies. They can learn fly fishing basics, catch fish with dealing with the wind or getting hooked on everything around them.

As they grow in experience I introduce them to some of my other fishing spots that take a bit more learnin’ and practice.

My favorite spot to take fly fishing newbies is a flooded strip-mine that has been stocked with smallmouth bass. This is such a great spot because it has little to zero wind, a lot of hiding places for bass to ambush their dinner and you can fish this area with or without a boat or float tube.

The area is surrounded by high hills created by all the mining which keeps the wind down. Plus over the years trees have taken root and now there is even better cover for the bass and more trees block more of the wind on those windy days.
